 I think the easiest way to avoid this (until we update to the latest scipy
 and test this again) is to check the scipy.linalg.det explicitly before
 attempting doing an inverse.  If that determinant is zero (or close enough
 to it), then return the same error as the doctest returns (i.e., some
 scipy error).
