Wow, robertwb is right; that was a lot of work.
Thanks for the generic normalize slice function. Eventually, it would be
great to move that to a more general utility function, maybe somewhere in
sage/misc or something. I can see it being very, very useful for other
objects that need to implement slice notation (for example, matrices and
vectors of other types).
