I should have mentioned that the patches are not meant to be applied on
top of each other. I kept the old ones up simply for comparison. Sorry for
the confusion.
For comparison, my (fairly modest) laptop finishes the tests in 126s.
Looking through the code again, I realized that I didn't make
`default_variable()` cache the results, so I've prepared a patch
(`default_variable.patch`) to be applied on top of
`piecewise_integration3.patch`.
