I have disabled tkagg globally and the problem above goes away. The spkg
by the same names as the last one above is at
http://sage.math.washington.edu/home/mabshoff/release-
cycles-3.3/rc1/matplotlib-0.98.5.3rc0-svn6910.p0.spkg
