I don't see any way that this change could break the algorithm, so I'm
guessing that these test failures are changing from one mathematically-
correct answer to another mathematically-correct answer. (But this should
definitely be checked by somebody who understands the mathematics.)
I'm adding wstein to the CC list on the theory that he may have written
the original code. (The code is present in the very first revision that
got checked in to mercurial, so version history doesn't say who wrote it.)
