After more thinking I think you may want to use
[http://www.delorie.com/gnu/docs/autoconf/autoconf_127.html
AC_CANONICAL_TARGET] it is usually used for cross compilation but it
should work in this case. It is much better than testing gcc since we may
want to use clang.
