 I disagree with

 suggested_size = min(suggested_size, int(mem.virtual_memory_limit()/10))
 }}}
 This `virtual_memory_limit` is ''per-process'', so the suggested size
 should be roughly equal to `virtual_memory_limit`, not much less. Maybe
 something like

 # Respect ulimit -v, use slightly less than maximum allowed amount of
 memory
 suggested_size = min(suggested_size, int(mem.virtual_memory_limit()*7/8))
 }}}
