It seems that `bash` treats `//` different from `/`:

jdemeyer@sage://$ pwd
//
}}}
So it seems to be a feature rather than a bug. It only happens for the
root though:

jdemeyer@sage:/$ cd /usr//bin
jdemeyer@sage:/usr/bin$ pwd
/usr/bin
}}}
