Yeah, I would say that one mention in the midst of
[http://www.sagemath.org/doc/installation/source.html#environment-
variables the env vars list] in the ''installation'' (not developer) guide
wouldn't be sufficient information to alert people to it. You shouldn't
expect a new (mathematically-oriented) developer to be aware of this, per
se.
