suspecting something in the toolchain - but it could be ld, glibc or even
kernel stuff rather than just gcc.
If there is another machine on which `special.py` works, then we can
really investigate. jpflori: can you retest with the latest Sage beta? If
everything works there, is there any chance I could get access to that
machine?
