New description:

The current ECL spkg disables unicode support, while it is enabled
 upstream. The patch [attachment:trac_12985_ecl_unicode_5.10.beta4.patch]
makes sage work correctly whether the ecl spkg enables unicode or not. The
 [http://boxen.math.washington.edu/home/jpuydt/ecl-12.12.1.p4.spkg] spkg is
compiled with unicode support -- which means less difference with
upstream, and is hence better for people packaging sage in various
 distributions.

 To review, apply [attachment:trac_12985_ecl_unicode_5.10.beta4.patch] and
 use [http://boxen.math.washington.edu/home/jpuydt/ecl-12.12.1.p4.spkg]
(recompile maxima afterwards if not from scratch).
