Not good. The documentation states:

- ``base_ring`` - the base ring. Defaults to `\QQ` if no character
is given, or to the minimal extension of `\QQ` containing the
values of the character.

I guess the *proper* solution would be to provide a `__reduce__` method
for modular symbols. Since modular symbols come in many different
flavours, this might be a bit awkward.
