I just noticed that `charpoly` the function unconditionally passes its
variable name to the method. Changed that, will be included in my next
patch, once we have reached consensus on what the variable name in the
default case should be. Of course if we were to agree that it should
always be `x` then that part would be superfluous, but I don't see me
agreeing to that unless I see a really strong argument for it.
