I had occasion yesterday to use my most recent patch for actual
computations that involve a lot of model changing, and I realized it's
shamefully buggy/nonfunctioning. I fixed a few of the obvious bugs but
I'll add more tests before I repost to make sure that I haven't introduced
other bugs.
