I wonder if there should be a symbolic link from "doc" at the top level
pointing to `src/doc/output/html/en`. Not exactly a new directory layout,
but in the spirit of this ticket: beginning users might be comforted to
find the documentation in an obvious place. This link should probably
created at the end of the build process, after building the docs (part of
the `doc` target in `Makefile`).
This could also be done on a separate ticket, of course.
