I have just been hit by a similar problem:

sage: R = LaurentPolynomialRing(ZZ, 'x')
sage: T = PolynomialRing(ZZ, 'x')
sage: R.gen() + T.gen()
2*x
sage: R.gen() + FractionField(T).gen()
BOOM !
