 Can you say more about this doctest failure? I see in the part3 patch, you
 simply chop off most of the result...is this because of unavoidable
 inconsistencies between platforms? It took me a long time to get that
 doctest right and I'd like to see it stay if possible, even though it's
 perhaps a little too cute for its own good.
