AFAIR, the `global_ring()` function you see in that file is expected to
return an object which has a `.set()` method. This method should change
the ordering of the current ring. I didn't want to add a `.set()` method
to the `BooleanPolynomialRing`, so decided to wrap it in a `RingProxy`
class.
Of course, this was centuries ago, and it's possible that I'm making up
all that I wrote above. :)
