I am not going to check whether this passes tests, but at any rate the
changes most recent seem fine, although I don't know why the non-doctest
pieces had to have the constant `C` instead of `c` (but I don't really
care about that). So if anyone checks it passes tests we are good here,
since #8734 is positive review.
