Thank you for the cleanup.
I gave this patch another spin and it looks like both the first and third
issue got solved by upgrading to matplotlib 1.3.
The second one is still present. I looked into it: it depends on the
method _cleanup of the class LatexManager in matplotlib (the definition is
in src/lib/matplotlib/backends/backend_pgf.py). Apparently when calling
_cleanup python/sage does not know any more of the existence of the module
os.path. I have no idea of how this is possible.
