might be better to treat `category_for` in an analogous way to `domain`,
i.e. to make it an attribute that can be either a `ConstantFunction` or to

branch in the ticket description.
Since the alternative branch `u/pbruin/15618-convert_map_category` may
still be relevant (to prevent potential memory leaks), I rebased it
