 I'm  against deprecating var.

 It is also common for a Python function to do something with side effects
 -- e.g., run a subprocess -- and also return some information about what
 it did, e.g., the exit code.    This is computer programming, not
 mathematics.

 I prefer

     %var x, y

 to

      var x, y

 by the way, since we have been generally deprecated non-% special
 commands.   I was annoyed at first by, e.g.,  Jason Grout doing this, but
 I've come around.
