Summary of why we use gcc instead of clang.
* We need a fortran compiler so we build gcc anyway
* A lot of packages shipped with sage won't compile with clang
* it is too hard to use clang for some and gcc for some other
* some of the package broken with clang my be in the too hard basket
I expect one way or another most packages in sage will eventually compile
with clang. I for one will work on this once gentoo-prefix on OS X finally
gets its toolchain issues sorted and default to clang.
