Patch has been rebased to Sage 6.8beta0, and I've implemented the changes
suggested by Volker.
All doctests pass (except one numerical tolerance failure in
src/sage/tests/french_book/linsolve_doctest.py, but this has already been
pointed out by Rob Beezer in https://groups.google.com/d/msg/sage-release
/QJJLny-GgRs/Agldt9D-RHYJ as an SMC architecture issue).
