I think that axes are, perhaps, more important, since they give a sense of
scale of a plot's "landscape."
But I'm happy to defer to D. Joyner on reviewing this ticket.
Another question, possibly very naive: Would it be less taxing on the
browser to use "quads" instead of triangles as mesh elements, at least in
some circumstances?
