I uploaded a rebased branch (by cherry-picking the relevant commits) on
top of #18086. The reasons are (1) there were some duplicate commits
(from the two versions of #18086) and merges of dependencies that are no
longer needed since they are in the latest beta, and (2) merging the new
branch from #18086 accidentally caused two copies of the method
`Newform.twist()` to be present. Hopefully we now have a clean branch to
work on.
