 your branch is working well and this is easier than the first solution
 proposed by Michele.

 sage: %timeit G.edge_connectivity()
 1 loops, best of 3: 1.02 s per loop
 sage: %timeit G.to_boost_graph().edge_connectivity()
 10 loops, best of 3: 46 ms per loop
