Comment:
Since the patches have bit-rotted for so long, I guess it makes sense to
start from scratch. Most part of the discussion here was about different
ways to store the _domain and _codomain. Since it should now be possible
to have fast ring-behaviour defined via category framework, I suppose one
can simply make them cdef attributes, which should be the fastest
solution.
