Here is a branch. The merge was not trivial, so, hopefully I did it well.
Next, we have to see if the "old problem" (i.e.,
attachment:testcoercion.py) is still problematic, and of course there may
be doctest failures.
At least, the issue from comment:20 is solved: We do have weak references
to the domain of coercion maps now.
