 And still the free group has no base ring... you would better do
 {{{
 try:
     unit = self.__universe.base_ring().one()
 except XXX:
     try:
         unit = self.__universe.one()
     except XXX
         unit = Integer(1)
 }}}
 And as Travis mentionned in [comment:6 comment:6] it is not clear to me
 either if this is the way to go.
