this point. Another issue: while it's nice to have informative error
messages, error strings that cost a lot to be constructed only to be
caught by an "except" statement can mean a performance penalty. This is
more an issue in python than in many other languages because there's a
culture in python (and perhaps even more so in some parts of sage) to use
exceptions for regular program flow control, not just for error
conditions.
Yes, that's my feeling too. While it is somehow unfortunate, I can very
well live with it.
I've fixed the doctests and tested the entire
`src/sage/rings/polynomial`-directory; let's see what the patchbot thinks.
