P.S.: To those unfamiliar with the tar ('''t'''ape '''a'''rchive) file
format:
In contrast to e.g. a zip archive, the tar header does ''not'' contain a
"table of contents"; to get a list all files contained in a tarball (or to
see whether it contains some file(s)), the ''whole archive'' has to get
read. (This originates from the sequential access of tapes, and has other
advantages.)
