 The "ad hoc" example above adds module-scope colormaps on-the-fly, with or
 without the "numpy" simplification, but it appears to confuse the
 doctesting script.  If it's OK to make the maps accessible as
 `sage.plot.colors.colormaps.mapname` instead of
 `sage.plot.colors.mapname`, say, I can add a simple subclass of
 [http://docs.python.org/library/collections.html#abcs-abstract-base-
 classes collections.Mapping] that lazily loads the maps as attributes of a
 `sage.plot.colors.colormaps` object.

 On the other hand, importing just `matplotlib.cm` seems to be fast.  We
 could keep the current code.
