I care a lot more about pickling being designed for graphs so it works in
the future and is immune to future upgrades. That's more important than
possibly breaking old pickles. E.g., all the matrix code is *designed*
so that old pickles always work yet new formats can be introduced. You
should look at that matrix code to see how this works.
