On lighter/darker: V6 just scalar multiplied the RGB coordinates, which I
think is equivalent to scaling L in HSL or V in HSV. For scaling up from
black, in this approach, I should have returned some grey. But
interpolation looks good to me!
Anyway, I apologize for the mess, especially for claiming to cover #5604.
