Thank you for your comments.
* I take your first point. It will be updated.
* The second point is of course true, but from what I have read, it is
unwise to have more than 4 tests, as some shell implementations do not
handle such cases well. However, the test for 'tar' is performed twice
there, which can be simplified somewhat
I'll make those changes.
