On Snow Leopard (OSX 10.6), re-enabling aqua allows the following:

sage: r.quartz(type='png')
NULL # But nice quartz viewer pops up!
sage: x = r([1,2,3])
sage: y = r([4,5,6])
sage: r.plot(x,y) # Nice plot of this pops up!
NULL
sage: r.dev_off() # Turns off the quartz viewer
null device
