I think that really what remains to be done is to remove dependencies on
obsolete fortrans (f77), see my other comment on this.

I don't see a necessity to try non-debian/ubunty version.
If you look at the debian patches, you see that all they changed is the
source
were slight tweaks in setup.py

Does this mean that we should think of importing cvxopt's matrix into Sage
under some other name? I don't know what the usual Sage's way to deal with
such things, i.e. name clashes between packages, is.
