It seems to only affect GF(2), and only when you pass in negative numbers:

sage: (GF(2)^10)(range(-5,5))
(0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 0, 1, 0, 1, 0)
sage: (GF(3)^10)(range(-5,5))
(1, 2, 0, 1, 2, 0, 1, 2, 0, 1)
