Comment:

 I just checked that the combined patch applies fine to 4.3.5.  I got just
 two doctest failures, as in the above report.  Otherwise all pass (64-bit
 ubuntu).

 For parent.pyx: this must be the same thing as in #8332?  You could just
 delete that doctest, since it tests something on an essentailly random
 class to which it used to apply but no longer does.

 Let's get these last two little things fixed, then this can at last get
 merged!
