Thanks for all this. Before I try it, can you just look at
sage/interfaces/r.py and and functions png() and plot() - either the
original or in the patch on this ticket? At least one of them (before and
after patch) has references to os.path.abspath, but perhaps that is what
was causing the conflict with your original patch. Because I haven't yet
had time to try to understand the NB workings, I am not sure if that is
part of the problem, but I had forgotten about that until this morning.
Maybe that path finding is no longer necessary.
