 Karl-Dieter, I can confirm your finding. More precisely, on a fresh clone
 made in Sage-4.4.2, I did "hg update -r 14320", i.e. reverting only the
 last change in version.py. Then I did "sage -b", and (only) version.py got
 updated.

 And then, doctesting "free_module.py" succeeds (I tried it several times)!

 Double-check: Doing "hg update -r 14321" (and then "sage -b", which
 touches only version.py), and after that --- doctesting "free_module.py"
 fails again (I also tested several times) ...

 BTW, thanks for the tip w.r.t. the "dot" doctest files --- I found it
 exactly there, under "~/.sage/tmp/.doctest_free_module.py". It looks
 totally innocent to me, however (the failing doctest is "example_23").
