I verified that the md5 you reported is for the right spkg and contains
the fix. If you have time, could you download the vanilla matplotlib
source and try compiling that, just to make sure it isn't a problem with
the Sage environment? The 1.0.0 source is here:

(I can't test this URL; it isn't loading for me...)
The installation instructions are here:

and basically are:
