Comment(by jhpalmieri):

 For what it's worth, I've tested the spkg posted here on a bunch of
 different platforms, both building from scratch and upgrading (followed by
 "sage -ba"), and it seems to behave well: passes all tests (except for
 known, unrelated, failures) on sage.math, taurus, menas, lena, my OS X
 box, and some tests on t2.math -- I haven't had time to run all of them,
 but it passes all tests on libs/singular/ and rings/. So I would give
 this a positive review. If you feel like merging this spkg instead of
 backing out #1396, you have that option. (For what it's worth, the
 package at #8059 does not work for me when I try to build 4.5.2.alpha0
 with it; maybe it's not compatible with #1396?)

 I'll run all long tests on t2.math tonight, and if there are no problems,
 I'll mark this officially as "positive review".

 As I said, after upgrading, you have to make sure to do "sage -ba". Is
 this automatic in the upgrade process?
