This is one of the tickets which the Sage nagbot regularly nags me about.
But anyone seeing Jeroen's last comment will wait rather than review it.
I suggest that *either* this patch gets reviewed as is, and Jeroen's
improvements go on another ticket, *or* the "needs review" tag is changed
to "needs work".
