 One could argue this is a gcc bug, as the Sun compiler is more clever and
 can work around the problem, but it's a gcc issue we need to work around.
 With Cliquer, it was just a matter of choosing the right options for the
 linker (see #9871), but in some cases it may need changes to the code, as
 discussed on that Sun blog.
