 On MacOS X, one should at the moment either do an "in-place" upgrade
 (without renaming the directory / copying the original installation) or
 follow the instructions given in comments below (regarding
 {{{LDSHARED}}}).

 On MacOS X, one should at the moment either do an "in-place" upgrade
