No, that's not sufficient to test it, it does not run the preprocessor.
If you want to run to preprocessor, the following works:

gcc -march=native -E -x c /dev/null -o /dev/null
}}}
Using this test, {{{-march=native}}} works for me on gcc 4.2.3, NOT on gcc
4.0.3
