Comment:

 The issue is of course that I never used `plot()` to do this, but rather
 only `line()` and `point()` and `Graphics()`.  The default aspect ratio
 seems to have changed a lot, and so not only are the labels on the left
 totally squished, but it just looks bad.  Maybe mpl defaults aren't that
 great?  Or is this a pretty unusual scenario?

 Anyway, putting as needs info until I know what is happening here from
 someone who knows more about mpl (e.g., Jason).  So frustrating, too,
 because we should have this in!
