I am willing to work through this, and at first glance the changes look
good.
There is one major issue: A kernel IS a subspace. Always. Even if it can
be canonically identified with the whole space.
I wouldn't let this pass for a minor release like 4.7.1. Rather, since the
behavior changes, we should wait for 4.8 or 5.0, until we merge this.
